A Featured extra space Article

Featured extra space Items

Well, my first official review. In this review I will be covering a brief
outline of the hosting website, hostican.

Ill start things off by simply saying, wow. In these first few days, I could
not be more pleased. I switched from using the hosting company HostMonster.com.
Let me confidently say that I made the right switch.

First things first, service. I had to call HostMonster about 2 times initially
when I joined them. What a pain! There was a line every time I needed to talk to
a representative, and Ill add that their Hold music is just plain awful. When
I switched to hostican, I called them up, bam, talking with a person
immediately. No waits, no ear-ripping music, nothing except good ol people to
talk to. Not to mention their demeanor and manners. I must say, my experience
with their service has up to this point been absolutely seamless.

Now lets move on to hosting. The best thing about their hosting, in my eyes, is
the simplicity of their two different plans. They are both relatively
inexpensive, come loaded with lots of useful features, and have some great
resources available. The base plan comes with 200GB of disk space, 2 domain
names, one FREE domain, 2,500GB of monthly bandwidth, along with being
e-commerce enabled. Impressive. Remember, that is just the basic plan, only
$6.95 per month.

Now I will admit I havent had a whole lot of time to mess around with the
control panel, however they do offer a demo control panel for anyone interested
in looking at that, just go to their site. Now there was one feature that
ultimately switched me to hostican - Wordpress. Im sure there are lots of other
dedicated hosts that offer wordpress, but hostican made it so simple, it was
absolutely unbelievable. You just go onto control panel, click install
wordpress, and bam, there you go. Dont forget that hostican also provides tons
of free video tutorials on everything from setting up email addresses to
managing files in control panel. I however will only be using the WordPress
features, so the rest of the control panel is up to you to test.

The last thing I will write about for now that really grabbed my attention was
their affiliate program. It is quite amazing I must say. Its free to setup, you
dont even have to have a domain hosted with them to make an account. Basically,
they pay you X amount of dollars per person that signs up using your unique
link. The rates are $70 for the first 4 people you get and $90 for everyone
after that (This resets every month). Also, you can get higher rates if you are
able to refer over 10 people every month. Talk about big money! I signed up for
this right away, and I have their advertisement in my top header that goes to my
unique link. If you sign up under that, you help me and you dont have to pay
extra fees, hidden fees, nothing like that. So if you are in need of a host and
are in a giving mood, feel free to click that Ad up in the top header for
hostican.com.

Well, thats my very simple and basic review. My overall impressions of hostican
are perfect. Up till now things have been smooth, simple, easy, fast,
everything. I would definitely recommend their services to you, and remember,
click my affiliate link to help me out! Overall 10/10, excellent hosting
company.

WHIR Magazine: May 2008 - The Green Issue

Wed, 30 Apr 2008 16:46:00 -0500

Not quite "just in time for Earth Day," as far as this blog is concerned, but April 22 (Earth Day) was actually the day we shipped the files for the latest issue of WHIR magazine off to the printer.

The date is fitting because May's issue is our "green issue," in which we look at one of the most notable issues in hosting from a variety of angles.

It's possible, I suppose that you're reading this blog for some reason other than the fact that you follow web hosting news, but if we accept my general "you, dear reader, are at least interested enough in web hosting to pay attention to the general industry news" assumption to be true, then it is probably also safe to assume that you've noticed the overall increase in "green" hosting news, not just in the last few weeks, but over the last few months.

Last year, not long after we settled on the notion of putting together a "green" issue, I began receiving the green issues of just about every magazine I regularly receive - I've got everything from Toronto Life to PC Magazine to Vanity Fair piled up around my desk.

Eco friendly living and business practices are a big issue across the board, and they've become a serious concern in the hosting business, which has an interesting relationship with environmentalism.

Hosting's biggest impact on the environment is through the consumption of electrical energy. Data centers, and the servers they contain, are an enormous draw on electrical power and, consequently, a significant producer of greenhouse gasses. But energy is also becoming one of the biggest expenses for hosting providers, making it possible for companies in this business to serve their bottom lines even as they pursue more environmentally responsible business practices.

This isn't the case in every industry. A lot of business are struggling to figure out ways to dispose of harmful waste, or to curb other destructive practices without the cost putting them out of business. For hosts, the path is clear.

There isn't yet a specific model for building a green hosting business. But it's on its way. What we set out to do with our green issue was describe the atmosphere in the industry relating to green initiatives, and we approached it form three angles.

The first was the movement itself, where, driven by the motives of conservation for its own sake and conservation for the sake of the bottom line, a culture is building among organizations and outfits working to build the standards by which we measure our "green" efforts.

Second is the practical implementation of green procedures in the data center. We examine the real-world limits most hosting companies face, and map out strategies for building efficiency into the data center.

Third is the message. Hosts pursuing green projects face a decision about the message they bring to customers. And those customers are not always receptive to marketing efforts tied inextricably to an ethical question.

Chances are, your experience with green hosting isn't going to begin, or end, with our green issue. But I'm hopeful that it will be helpful to you in mapping out your business's relationship with environmental issues.

Why choose paying for your for your web hosting when you do not have to? Try to get paid by letting people know you like your web host.

Hostican uptime for March 2008: 99.953% (over the Internet)

Mr. Giles added, ”Cory’s leadership in these areas will help attract customers wanting top-notch customer service at every point of service, from pre-sales to ongoing support, something rarely seen in the hosting industry. When our customers are happy, our retention rates increase and customers start spreading the word about the quality of our hosting and support services.”

The hosting service works fine, although we have a very low volume of traffic
(less then 500mb a month). Unfortunately, from time to time, every few days, our
email would stop arriving. We wouldn't actually loose any mail, but email would
be delayed by as much as an hour sometimes. We complained about this to
ixwebhosting a few times through their online live chat help. No resolution
came, even though I even contacted them at the moment when our email was NOT
working - so they could experience the problem as well during 'live chat' help.
Later I recieved an email saying that they tested our email, and that we have no
problem and that ticket has been 'resolved' (not!). Just like every previous
time. They know it is an intermittent problem and they check once in a blue moon
and based on that conclude that everything is fine. So email problems stay
unresolved. Too bad, it seemed like a good deal and a good place for one's
hosting needs.

SixApart, WordPress and 37Signals Support OpenID; Why Not 1&1 and GoDaddy?

Wed, 07 Mar 2007 12:09:00 -0400

I've been reading a lot about OpenID, a free, decentralized framework for managing digital identities. You start with an URI (think of it as a master username) and store your password and other creditials with an OpenID provider. You can then log into any OpenID enabled service with your URI. The service will fetch whatever credentials it needs from your identity provider.

Simon Willison wrote a great post on cool things you can do with OpenID. My favorite is restricted single sign on. Simon suggested that if everyone in an organization had "username.internal.example.org" OpenIDs, all internal apps behind the firewall could be configured to grant automatic access to such users. This eliminates the hassle of creating/deleting accounts on each service for incoming/departing employees. Couldn't GoDaddy use a similar method to apply the same logins across its many services?

I'm also intrigued by Kai Hendry's comment that maybe OpenID can be used for brokering payments. This would allow access pass holders to view content, download songs, etc across multiple sites. Not that this technology isn't already available, but OpenID would save subscribers from having to keep track of different logins for different networks.

Anyway, Microsoft announced last month that it would make Windows Cardspace interoperable with OpenID. A couple of weeks later, AOL announced its support as well. SixApart is in (in fact, OpenID creator Brad Fitzpatrick also developed LiveJournal, and is SixApart's chief architect). And Digg. And ImageShack, WordPress, Technorati, SmugMug, 37Signals...

Recently I signed up for isabel.wang.name as my OpenID through FreeYourID (which I read about on TechCrunch). If nothing else, they managed to sell me a .name domain. My question is, why isn't 1&1 in this market as well?

Switched From Gentoo to Ubuntu

Thu, 06 Mar 2008 12:12:57 +1100

SliceHost 3-Way-Handshake Podcast Episode 8 — over 80% of Slice at SliceHost runs on Debian-based distributions (Debian, Ubuntu), verses around 5.5% for Gentoo. RPM-based distributions (CentOS, Fedora, etc) is a bit bigger but simply does not compare with overwhelming domination of Debian-based distributions.

Over the last 3-4 months I have also gradually moved my Gentoo based servers to either Ubuntu or Debian (prefer the latest Ubuntu if available). In fact I have just deleted my 18 month old Gentoo slice at SliceHost, and moved all content to a new slice running Ubuntu 7.10 last month. Now I am happy to say that all of my live servers/VPS are now running either Ubuntu or Debian, and it has changed my Monday morning (my usual mass-update morning) from:

  1. # emerge --sync

  2. # emerge -avD world

  3. Starring at compilation messages scrolling across the screen.

  4. Trying to figure out why some packages are blocking, some packages do not emerge, and why some packages I upgraded last week is now down-grading again.

  5. … 20 minutes later I finally got my root prompt back!

  6. Restart all services that I have emerged, finger crossed hoping that nothing breaks, otherwise revdep-rebuild while reading special upgrading instruction on PAM, MySQL, or OpenSSL at Gentoo.org.

To:

  1. # apt-get update

  2. # apt-get upgrade

Upgrading all the packages in the Gentoo Portage system can be very time consuming, and it gets worse when you have quite a few servers to upgrade!

However, I still love my Gentoo and still use it on my desktop and my home server, continuously updated over the last 3-4 years. We still use it at work because of how configurable it is, and how easy it is to write an ebuild script. Portage, IMHO, is still the best thing since slice bread, but unfortunately it is not the best thing for my VPS at slice host. Building takes too long, it is too CPU and IO intensive that I am afraid I am hurting my neighbours’ performance. Moreover, if something breaks my application due to upgrading (far less than uncommon in the Gentoo world), it will take ages to revert back to the previous version (especially heavy builds like MySQL upgrades) — when my service is down!

Great for development boxes, but not so great for production boxes hosting services that people might want to access 24/7.

Ubuntu is constantly improving since the last time I gave it a try. apt-get is a joy to use comparing to yum on CentOS/Fedora. It has almost all the packages I need, and Debian package control files are not that hard to write either. One thing I have not yet tried is dist-upgrade, which is probably even more scary than emerge world. HardyHeron will (hopefully) be released next month so I guess I’ll be able to find out how easy dist-upgrade on a VPS is.

Affiliate Programs

Sun, 03 Sep 2006 04:12:28 -0400

Affiliate Programs Explained

Affiliate Programs - WebsiteMaven.comThe internet has many opportunities to make money by advertising other companies' products and services. With over 16 million web pages on the Internet, it's nearly impossible to "stumble upon" a company's site. Companies figured out if they pay commissions to "average Joes" they could drive customers to their site at very little cost. Why pay for a large sales force when you can pay a commission to an affiliate only when a sale is made? Affiliate programs not only improve their bottom line but are a free way for them to "get the word out" about their site.
